Dyckias

Relatives of the Pineapple family, Dyckias grow in a rounded rosette form with colored leaves that are edged in sharp silvery-white spines. Most produce an orangish bloom on tall spikes in late Spring that attract pollinators. Dyckias are cold hardy, heat and drought tolerant and wildlife resistant. Unlike true succulents, they do not store water for arid times in their leaves, but respond to stressful conditions by just going dormant until adequate water revives them again. They are the perfect choice for the “plant it and forget it” type of gardener in xeriscapes, rock gardens and well-drained containers. Several varieties are sold here at Creekside in 2 gallon TC pots in colors from a deep burgundy to metallic silver.

Dyckias

Dyckias are the shining stars of the bromeliad world. With their beautiful rounded rosettes of colored leaves edged in sharp silvery-white spines, they bring color and snap to any container, rock garden or xeriscape. Most produce an orangish bloom on tall spikes above the foliage in late Spring that attract hummingbirds and bees. Cold hardy, heat and drought tolerant and definitely deer and rabbit resistant, they are a perfect choice for the “plant it and forget it” type of gardener. We carry several different varieties here at the nursery ranging in color from metallic silver to a deep burgundy.

Splendida Agave

The Splendida variety of agave has dark green leaves marked with a bright, yellowish-green stripe down the center of each leaf. The leaf margins are lined with stout spines. When mature, this plant can produce up to a 12' tall flower stalk with spidery, fragrant flowers after which it will die off. However, like most agaves, this variety will form offshoots or “pups” around the base of the parent plant as it ages that can be transplanted to new containers or into the ground. Heat and drought tolerant, it performs best in well-drained soil with full sun exposure and little water needs. Sold here at Creekside Nursery in 2 and 7 gallon containers.

Easter Barrel Cactus

Easter Barrel Cactus is a popular cacti that we offer in both quarts (12 per flat) and in our 2 gallon terra cotta pots. Suitable for indoor use or as a container plant and in rock gardens. Both heat and drought tolerant, they require sandy, well-drained soil for best results. This variety of cactus blooms with a beautiful display of huge, showy, light lavender-pink flowers. These plants are native to arid desert regions and usually have only rainfall to supply their moisture needs, so be sure not to overwater.

Vanzie Agave

The Vanzie Agave is a very attractive and interesting agave with deeply channeled leaves and small margin teeth. It is more adaptable to damp, cool climates than many other blue agaves. Soft blue-gray leaves are abundant, developing large clumps with age and has a faster growing habit than most agaves. Makes a striking statement when mass planted and is considered evergreen in most climates.
