Rio Grande Purslane is a low-growing, vigorous annual that blooms heavily in the heat of summer. We carry them in hanging baskets in a variety of colors: magenta, orange, and yellow. Compared to other varieties, the Rio Grande variety is known for its tropical look. It is a prostrate trailing annual that typically grows to 4-6" tall with a spread to 10-12" wide. By nature, Purslane is a succulent, therefore making it drought resistant and a fan of well-drained soil. Plant in a sunny spot and it will bloom all year long.

As summer comes to an end (and we are promised some relief from the heat) we will start to see blooms on ornamental grasses. Here at Creekside, Blue Bayou Pampas Grass is already showing off its cream-colored plumes. Blue Bayou is a dwarf Pampas Grass, growing to be about 5’ tall. It is a well-behaved, shorter alternative to traditional Pampas Grass. The name “Blue Bayou” comes from its unique, blue-tinted foliage. It is drought-tolerant, and has exceptional salt tolerance.

Buddleias provide beautiful color from summer to fall. Commonly known as the Butterfly Bush, Buddleias are enticing to both hummingbirds and butterflies.  We currently have two varieties of Buddleia on availability: Pink Delight and Attraction. Both varieties would thrive in areas with full sun and well-drained soil. Pink Delight grows the largest flower spike of any variety, and Attraction (a deep purple bloom) provides the option of a more compact, rounded shrub. Both varieties can grow to a height of about 6’ tall with a spread of up to 5’.

Water Oak (Quercus nigra) is medium to large, a semi-evergreen tree. The leaves are dark green and bell-shaped, with alternate arrangement. The Water Oak has a medium fast growth rate, with height increases of more than 24" per year. At maturity, the Water Oak can grow to a height of 50-80’. Unlike the typical Live Oak, the Water Oak grows in a conical form and has a rounded crown at the top. The acorns of the Water Oak also differ from the Live Oak, they are a bit smaller and their caps are woolly, rather than scaly. The Water Oak grows in USDA zones 6-9.

Andorra Juniper is a spreading evergreen with foliage that is bright green in summer, and turns to purple-plum in the fall and winter. It has a low growth habit with tightly knit branches and is versatile in rock gardens, borders or in mass planting. Andorra Juniper will grow to be about 12 inches tall at maturity, with a spread of up to 10 feet. This plant does best in full sun to partial shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist growing conditions, but will not tolerate any standing water. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, making it an ideal choice for a low-water garden or xeriscape application.
