Several varieties of Coleus have been added to our current Availability and they are stunning! They love the heat, but will grow as annuals in just about any garden. They are only hardy outside in Zone 11, but can be grown as houseplants year-round with appropriate lighting. The Kong line is good in shade and part-sun. The Burgundy Sun Coleus is aptly named because its darker foliage performs better with sun and produces its most vivid color in bright sunlight. Coleus does bloom, but the small flowers are fairly insignificant in comparison to the beautiful foliage. Most gardeners simply pinch off the bloom stalks to encourage more vigor to the colored leaves.

Groundcovers are used to prevent grass or weeds and conceal bare earth. They can form a dense carpet-like mat that can even survive some foot traffic. Most are deer and rabbit resistant. Those that bloom are attractive to pollinators and some produce fruit that provides food for birds and small wildlife. Traits vary from drought tolerant to thriving in wet areas, from performing well in full sun to filtered shade and some are even salt-tolerant for planting in coastal areas. This Canna is a large grower with dark maroon, almost black foliage that blooms in mid to late summer with stunning crimson red flowers. Australian Canna Lilies love hot weather and thrive when planted in full sun to partial shade. They can also be grown in large containers. Canna lilies are great pond-side plants that can tolerate moist ground as well. Growing fast, the lush foliage quickly forms a large-leaved tropical screen that can reach a mature size of 5’ tall by 2-3' wide. Performs best in Zones 7-10, but in colder zones, the rhizomes can be lifted and stored over winter to re-plant when danger of last ground freeze has passed.

This evergreen shrub offers coppery colored foliage on the new growth. Spicy scented, fragrant, pink flowers appear in late summer and are followed by a yellow fruit in winter or early spring. Plant as a focal point in the landscape or makes a good screen when planted in rows due to its dense canopy. Fruit and most desirable bush form come from planting in full sun although Loquats can tolerate partial shade and a variety of well-drained soils. Grown here at Creekside Nursery in 5 and 15 gallon containers.

Commonly known as a Leopard Plant this perennial has large glossy heart-shaped leaves that resemble lily pads. They can reach a mature height of 3-4 feet and spread up to 2-3 feet wide. Beautiful yellow daisy-like flowers rise above the leaves on multi-branched stems from late summer thru fall and even winter in more temperate climates. They grow best in Zones 7-10 when planted in partial to full shade and require moist, but well-drained soil.
