Bleeding Heart Clereodendron

Bleeding Heart is a spreading vine-like plant with evergreen foliage. It can be grown to climb on a support, spill freely from a hanging basket, or be left to trail along on its own. It can also be pruned up to display as a thick shrub. This plant blooms on new growth, so it is best to cut the plant back after current blooms have faded. Obviously, the highlight of this plant is its showy bicolored white and red flower. The white part of the flowers can last for months, but the bright red “blood drop” fades quicker. Needs bright sun for the most vibrant blooms, but performs best with protection from intense hot afternoon sun. Although it is root hardy to Zone 9, it really is a tropical plant and does need protection from freezing temperatures. In cooler areas of the country it can be grown as a houseplant with exposure to bright sunlight. Sold in a tee-pee staked 2 gallon TC pot here at Creekside Nursery!

Coleus

Kong varieties of Coleus have been added to our current Availability and they are stunning! They love the heat, but will grow as annuals in just about any garden. They are only hardy outside in Zone 11, but can be grown as houseplants year-round with appropriate lighting. The Kong line is good in shade and part-sun. Coleus does bloom, but the small flowers are fairly insignificant in comparison to the beautiful foliage. Most gardeners simply pinch off the bloom stalks to encourage more vigor to the colored leaves.

Bougainvilleas

This heat loving flowering shrub boasts beautiful bracts (colored leaves) atop upright vining branches. These flowering machines will bloom year-round in warm climates. In a climate where the winters are cool, they’ll bloom for 9-10 months. The tiny white centers are actually the flowers and the bracts are what give us those big shows of color. Bougainvilleas put out a big explosion of color, drop their bracts and then flower again. Makes for a wonderful accent plant as its rapid growth makes this an excellent selection as a cover for arbors, trellises, and fences. Prefers dry well drained soil for best flower production.

Gigantea Farfugium

Commonly known as a Leopard Plant this perennial has large glossy heart-shaped leaves that resemble lily pads. They can reach a mature height of 3-4 feet and spread up to 2-3 feet wide. Beautiful yellow daisy-like flowers rise above the leaves on multi-branched stems from late summer thru fall and even winter in more temperate climates. They grow best in Zones 7-10 when planted in partial to full shade and require moist, but well-drained soil. Plant in large movable containers in cooler zones or in shady beds in warmer zones. The tops will die back when temperatures drop below 20 degrees, but sprout back when spring temperatures stabilize.

Dianthus Telstar Mix

Long known for its exceptional outdoor performance, Telstar Mix blooms early in the pack, then continues to bloom in the garden throughout the majority of the summer and well up through frost. This variety makes a spectacular display of color in the spring and summer garden in borders, mass plantings and as a seasonal ground cover!
