Dyckias

Relatives of the Pineapple family, Dyckias grow in a rounded rosette form with colored leaves that are edged in sharp silvery-white spines. Most produce an orangish bloom on tall spikes in late Spring that attract pollinators. Dyckias are cold hardy, heat and drought tolerant and wildlife resistant. Unlike true succulents, they do not store water for arid times in their leaves, but respond to stressful conditions by just going dormant until adequate water revives them again. They are the perfect choice for the “plant it and forget it” type of gardener in xeriscapes, rock gardens and well-drained containers. Several varieties are sold here at Creekside in 2 gallon TC pots in colors from a deep burgundy to metallic silver.

Golden Barrel Cactus

Growing as a large roughly spherical globe, Echinocactus grusonii may eventually reach over 1 metre (3.3 ft) in height after many years. Younger Golden Barrel plants do not look similar to mature specimens. The generation lifetime is estimated to be around 30 years! There may be up to 35 pronounced ribs in mature plants, though they are not evident in young plants, which may have a knobbly appearance. The sharp spines are long, straight, or slightly curved, and various shades of yellow or, occasionally, white. Small yellow flowers appear in summer around the crown of the plant!

Burgundy Glow Ajuga

Sometimes called Bugleweed, this is a perennial groundcover with variegated foliage. Low-growing rosettes stay close to the ground, creating a dense carpet that thwarts weeds and controls erosion. It can fill in spaces where other plants struggle to grow - even under Black Walnut trees whose chemical Juglone prevents most plant life from surviving. Short spikes of blue flowers rise above the foliage late in Spring. Deer and rabbit resistant, it thrives in Zones 4-9 in all types of lighting and the flowers attract bees and hummingbirds.
