Golden Barrel Cactus

Growing as a large roughly spherical globe, Echinocactus grusonii may eventually reach over 1 metre (3.3 ft) in height after many years. Younger Golden Barrel plants do not look similar to mature specimens. The generation lifetime is estimated to be around 30 years! There may be up to 35 pronounced ribs in mature plants, though they are not evident in young plants, which may have a knobbly appearance. The sharp spines are long, straight, or slightly curved, and various shades of yellow or, occasionally, white. Small yellow flowers appear in summer around the crown of the plant!

Burgundy Glow Ajuga

Sometimes called Bugleweed, this is a perennial groundcover with variegated foliage. Low-growing rosettes stay close to the ground, creating a dense carpet that thwarts weeds and controls erosion. It can fill in spaces where other plants struggle to grow - even under Black Walnut trees whose chemical Juglone prevents most plant life from surviving. Short spikes of blue flowers rise above the foliage late in Spring. Deer and rabbit resistant, it thrives in Zones 4-9 in all types of lighting and the flowers attract bees and hummingbirds. Also known as Chaste Tree, Vitex has aromatic green leaves and stunning long, narrow spikes of purple flowers that cover this plant in the summer months.These fragrant flowers attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.After blooming, narrow spikes of round, dark brown seeds are produced.Vitex grows shrub-like, but can be shaped into a tree form by trimming away the lower branches during its winter dormant period. They can achieve a mature size of 25 feet tall and wide. Handles hot summers, as well as tolerating short-term temperatures below Zero F. Hardy in Zones 6-10.

Fatsia Japonica

Fatsia Japonica, also called Japanese Aralia, is a tropical looking evergreen shrub with large palm-like glossy green leaves. Performs beautifully is a shady garden spot and can also be grown in large containers for patio or entryway use. Produces clusters of white flowers late winter into spring. The foliage can be used in cut flower arrangements and lasts for weeks. Can grow up to 6 feet in height with a comparable spread and does best in Zones 7-10.
