Flame Acanthus

Flame Acanthus gets its name from the vibrant red/orange flower blooms that appear from mid-summer until frost. It is a deciduous small shrub that is hardy in Zone 8, and root hardy in Zone 7. It will grow to be 3 to 4 feet wide with a height up to 5 feet. This Texas native is adaptable to sunny, well drained places throughout the state. It is drought tolerant, very high heat tolerant, as well as attractive to butterflies. The Flame Acanthus thrives in both full sun and in partial shade and does well in a xeric landscape.

Dichondra Silver Falls

Dichondra Silver Falls is a trailing annual that has a beautiful ruffled fan shaped silver foliage. It is grown for its foliage more than for a flower or bloom. It is heat and drought tolerant. While it looks delicate, it is hardy to 30 degrees and most found in zones 9a-11b. Hanging Baskets, container gardens or planted as a ground cover, you can expect the Dichondra Silver Falls to grow 2 to 3 inches tall and between 3 and 5 feet wide. Blue Lyme Grass

Blue Lyme Grass is a cool season, drought tolerant evergreen that can tolerate some hot weather. It grows best in Zones 3-9 and will grow 2 feet tall with a width of 1 to 2 feet. It has a pretty silver/white foliage and produces tall flower spikes that bloom in the summer. The blooms turn beige as they mature. Creekside Nursery sells Blue Lyme Grass in a 1 gallon container.

Montrose Purple Vitex

Montrose Purple Vitex is a drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant and pest-tolerant deciduous flowering shrub or small tree. It will grow between 9 and 15 feet tall with a spreading width of up to 15 feet. The violet colored flowers are great for attracting birds and butterflies into the landscape. It’s large flowers, compared to other Vitex varieties, with bloom spikes 2 to 3 times bigger than other varieties, which makes this cultivar a favorite. Blooms can be between 8 and 12 inches.

Caryopteris 'Dark Knight'

In late summer and early fall, when few other shrubs are in bloom, Caryopteris ‘Dark Knight’ is a showy bloomer. Its deep blue to lavender flowers are very interesting against the gray-green foliage. Beautiful in front of low walls, in mass groupings, as a hedge, or even as a specimen plant, it has a tidy, upright growth habit. It is small enough for a patio garden. Grows to approximately 3’ x 5’.
