Purple Leaf Loropetalum

Sometimes called Chinese or Red Fringe Flower because of their frilly pinkish red flowers that bloom along the branches, the Purple Leaf Loropetalum is a beautiful shrub whose rich burgundy red foliage makes it an excellent focal plant or impressive hedge. The flowers are attractive to bees and the foliage is deer resistant. Recommended for Zones 7-10 and loves full sun but can also handle partial shade. They are easy to grow and tolerate a wide range of soils and landscape conditions. Loropetalums can grow 6-8' tall with a width of up to 6-8’, but can be pruned to maintain a smaller size and shape. Loropetalums here at Creekside Nursery are sold in a 3 gallon size.

BOXWOODS

Creekside Nursery offers two varieties of Boxwoods that can be used in an assortment of landscape applications. Japanese and Wintergreen Boxwoods make great natural or shaped hedges, topiaries and even bonsai art for the discerning grower. Both varieties produce white or creamy yellow flowers, but it’s the beautiful glossy green foliage that makes them a landscape standout. The Japanese applies itself well for screening hedges or doorway planters with its taller height while the Wintergreen’s more compact growth habit works well for planting under windows, in English garden designs or pathway definers. Relatively deer and disease resistant, our boxwoods are very easy to grow plants that require little care other than well-draining soil and work best with filtered sun. Both varieties are available in 1 and 3 gallons sizes.

Cassia Corymbosa - Yellow Senna

This is a tall, upright, fast-growing shrub with feathery leaves and a bright colorful display of large clusters of 1” golden-yellow flowers that can bloom from late summer to winter. It is normally evergreen in the Houston and surrounding areas, but is susceptible to extremely cold weather. Will sprout back if pruned after a damaging cold event. Cassia Corymbosa can grow 6’-10’ tall and can easily be pruned and trained into a small canopied tree-like shape. Both heat and drought tolerant, it is also considered as deer resistant. They are trouble-free growers which can endure a certain amount of neglect. Enjoys full sun and is a major butterfly and hummingbird nectar plant. Blooms are followed by beanlike 4- to 5-inch-long seed pods.

Frostproof Gardenia

The Frostproof Gardenia bears shiny, dark, thick medium-sized green leaves that are considered evergreen and contrast nicely with the intensely fragrant, double white flowers that bloom in late spring and through the early summer. The flower buds, that set in late July and early August and carry through winter, are resistant to late spring frosts that can damage them. This is an excellent choice for a lower-growing hedge or foundation planting. This gardenia can thrive with more direct sun than most other varieties and prefers well drained, acidic soils. When the soil is not acid enough, the plants cannot absorb needed iron appropriately and this can lead to a yellowish cast of the leaves known as Iron Chlorosis.

Elaeagnus Ebbengei

A dense evergreen shrub with upright, spineless branches densely dressed with silver-scaled green foliage. The stems and new growth are accentuated by brown scales. Very small, intensely fragrant flowers open in the Fall and are followed by small red berries. This makes an excellent hedge, foundation shrub or small accent tree. It is resistant to maritime exposure and salt-laden winds. It can grow right next to the sea and when grown into hedge form, can give good wind protection. Stays evergreen in mild winter climates and will tolerate all but extremely soggy soils. It is as happy in full sun as it is in deep shade making it an all-around great choice for many landscape applications.
