Groundcovers

Groundcovers are used to prevent grass or weeds and conceal bare earth. They can form a dense carpet-like mat that can even survive some foot traffic. Most are deer and rabbit resistant. Those that bloom are attractive to pollinators and some produce fruit that provides food for birds and small wildlife. Traits vary from drought tolerant to thriving in wet areas, from performing well in full sun to filtered shade and some are even salt-tolerant for planting in coastal areas. We carry a wide variety of groundcover plants from Ajugas to Ivys to Vincas and so much more in between.

Silver Falls Dichondra

Dichondra, also known as Silver Ponyfoot, is a trailing annual that has beautiful, ruffled, fan-shaped silver-green foliage. Works great as a groundcover, cascading over retaining walls or out of hanging baskets and mixed containers. The silver-gray foliage has a metallic appearance in the sun. Dichondra is a native Texas plant and is considered deer and pest resistant. It is also heat and drought tolerant and is commonly used in xeriscapes.

Sandy Leaf Fig Ivy

This evergreen groundcover grows to around 6" tall and can reach 5' in length. This ivy will grow in sun or shade and does not climb. Stays short and tight where it gets sun, but will grow taller in the shade. Works well as a groundcover or plant it in a container to spill over the sides for added interest to a specimen plant. New leaves emerge as bright green and then transition to an eye catching dark emerald green as the plant matures. Sold here at Creekside Nursery in 1 gallon pots.

Tricolor Asian Jasmine

This variety of Jasmine is a self-climbing or sprawling vine. While it is not known for exceptionally visual flowers, its pink, white and green-blushed foliage is the real attention getter. If it is allowed to climb, it will produce tiny yellow very fragrant flowers. New foliage emerges nearly pure white with pink blush and occasional green speckles. Mature leaves are small and oval with a glossy finish. Performs best in Zones 7B-11 and can handle full sun in cooler areas, but needs partial shade in the hotter zones. In mild winter regions, the white, pink, rose and green foliage will add visual interest year-round and the pinks will deepen to a rosy reddish burgundy.

Fig Ivy

This is a creeping perennial vine that adheres to surfaces by way of aerial roots along the spreading stems. The leaves are heart-shaped and bright green when young, maturing to dark green. It can have many shades of green on the same plant. Climbs quickly and can grow up to 25’ tall with a 3+’ spread per plant. Trim back old growth to promote new growth. Great for covering a brick or concrete wall, an arbor, a trellis or fences. Also can be used on topiary wiring to create shapes and designs. Considered an evergreen in protected areas and thrives in Zones 9-11.
