This member of the grass family grows 12-18" tall and is hardy in Zones 8-10. With its gracefully narrow arching leaves this plant makes a great border, mass planting or ground cover. Considered a perennial in most areas, cut back in early spring for best growth. Works well in sun or shade. Grows in moist areas where most plants would struggle.
With its dark green velvety and glossy foliage with burgundy undersides, this plant makes a striking backdrop in a partial shade area. Growing to 3 foot tall, this alocasia will work well in a small patio area and also in containers. Alocasia does bloom with a small calla type flower, but the flowers tend to not be noticeable. Plant in a rich soil mix and water well until established. Hardy Zone 9.
Magnolia maudiae also known as the Smiling Monkey Tree grows well in mild climates Zones 7-10. This magnolia originally from China, is well suited to grow in pots unlike most magnolias. Flowers in the winter with large 6" cream /ivory blooms along the branches rather than on the tip. Smiling Monkey Tree will grow in all light conditions from shade to full sun. Plant in well drained rich soil for best growth. Planted in the ground, this Magnolia can reach 20 feet with a 10 foot spread.
In Texas, growing lilies is not easy. One species which has proven adaptable to all soil types is the Philippine Lily. Though it resembles the Easter Lily, this lily will bloom in the late summer months of June-August. As the evening cools down, the flowers release their scent. Mixed with night blooming Jasmines in a bed will add a great scented garden to any landscape. Seeds that fall to the ground will germinate without assistance. They can also be gathered and shared with other gardeners.
Vinca Major is an evergreen perennial with a broad leaf. Vinca major is classified as a ground cover but, works well in mixed planters or hanging baskets. Produces bluish-lavender flowers in the spring and summer months. Prefers part sun to full shade likes moist soil but, can also be fairly drought tolerant. Vinca can be somewhat invasive but, you can control this by cutting back runners. Hardy zones 4-8.
