Cassia Corymbosa - Yellow Senna

This is a tall, upright, fast-growing shrub with feathery leaves and a bright colorful display of large clusters of 1” golden-yellow flowers that can bloom from late summer to winter. It is normally evergreen in the Houston and surrounding areas, but is susceptible to extremely cold weather. Will sprout back if pruned after a damaging cold event. Cassia Corymbosa can grow 6’-10’ tall and can easily be pruned and trained into a small canopied tree-like shape. Both heat and drought tolerant, it is also considered as deer resistant. They are trouble-free growers which can endure a certain amount of neglect. Enjoys full sun and is a major butterfly and hummingbird nectar plant. Blooms are followed by beanlike 4- to 5-inch-long seed pods.

Color Guard Yucca

The green and yellow foliage of Color Guard Yucca is stiff and produces snowy white flowers on a tall spike in late spring to early summer that are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. It is also covered in hundreds of curly white filamentous ‘hairs'. Sold here at Creekside Nursery in a 5 gallon size, it is ideal as an accent or container specimen, or planted in mass. It is tolerant of wind, heat, humidity, and drought and is considered as deer and rabbit resistant. As long as it is well-draining, Yucca does not care what type of soil you plant it in, and while they do prefer full sun, they can be tolerant of some light shade. Sharp-tipped leaves mean you should consider planting yuccas away from sidewalks, paths, mailboxes and driveways. Plants can quickly reach 3 to 4 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide, so plan to give yourself plenty of space to move around your Yuccas.

Burgundy Sun Coleus

The Burgundy Sun Coleus is a low-maintenance annual that is highly resistant to serious disease or insect problems so it requires little or no pesticide to stay healthy. Attractive burgundy foliage displays its beautiful color from mid-spring to fall. Great in containers or planted in masses. This variety can handle full sun to moderately shady conditions and needs a well-drained soil, but their colors are most vivid in bright sun. Some gardeners leave the small flowers, but it's best to pinch them off to direct more energy into stem and foliage growth.

Summerwine Wisteria

Blooming vines are a great way to jazz up a trellis, fence, or arbor while adding color and fragrance to your landscape. This woody twining vine fits that bill perfectly. Its evergreen leaves are a leathery dark green. In summer, reddish-purple, pea-like flowers bloom in large clusters. The blooms are highly fragrant and the plant itself is not as invasive as the more common lavender Wisteria. Deadheading (removing spent flowers) can encourage your vine to keep blooming throughout the warm weather season.
