Penny Mac Hydrangeas

Few things evoke images of the grand ole' south like it's plantation homes and the lavish grounds that surrounded them. Nestled amongst the Magnolias, Azaleas and Camellias, we find the true Southern Belles, the Hydrangeas.

Recognizable worldwide, this Japanese beauty is actually one of the most carefree, undemanding shrubs in our landscape pallet today! Modern hybridizers have had a hay-day with this plant group and have taken what our Grandma's loved about Hydrangeas and have made huge improvements!

Penny Mac is what is referred to as a Mop Head Hydrangea because of the shape of the flower head. This variety stays tight and compact , 4-6' x 3-4'. But the BIG selling point about this new generation of Hydrangeas is that the plant breeders have manipulated the bloom times! The old-time plants bloomed once around May and that was it 'till the following year . Penny Mac is a little different, however. Rather than a single , typical bloom in May, they also produce flowers all during the summer months!

Hydrangeas need shade to morning sun. They are one of the few plants that bloom in shade much less giving us repeat color over many months. They need rich soil, heavy mulch and steady moisture.

Mophead Hydrangeas are like living litmus paper because the color of the blooms will tell you whether you have an acid soil or an alkaline soil. Acid soils produce more blue blooms while alkaline soil turns flowers more pink. Amendments can be added to the soil in the fall to try and influence the bloom color. Our growing conditions here at Creekside Nursery give us predominently pink blooms but the tinge of blue is definately apparent throughout the entire crop!

Creekside Nursery has a lovely crop of young, vigourous 3 gallon containers READY TO PLANT !
